Single-column resumes with section headers (Experience, Education, Skills): clean conversion. Two-column resumes with sidebars: usually clean, sometimes columns swap order. Bullet lists: preserved as bullet lists. Bold text: preserved. Italics: preserved.
What needs cleanup
Custom fonts (e.g., Calibri Light → substituted with closest match). Heavy graphic elements (full-width header bands, icon bullets). Photos: preserved as embedded images. Tables: preserved but cell merging may need fixing.
ATS implications
When you re-export the edited Word back to PDF, the result stays ATS-friendly as long as you didn't add tables or text boxes during editing. Most ATS systems prefer linear text — sections in order, top to bottom.
When to start over instead
If your PDF was originally a fancy designer resume (Canva, Figma, custom InDesign), the Word conversion will look messy. In that case, copy the text into a clean Word resume template — faster than fixing layout.
